Genevieve Miles EP Release

There’s a certain kind of magic that fills The Night Owl, but on the evening of Genevieve Miles’ EP release show, the Digbeth venue felt especially alive. Fans packed in early for a celebration of a local artist whose sound has quietly but confidently echoed through the scene. With a room full of familiar faces, from close friends and loyal supporters to well-known names from the local scene, Genevieve put on an event that not only celebrated her own personal achievement but also served as a huge celebration of local artists.

Fern

Fern, a local acoustic indie-folk duo, opened the night with a set that was tender and thoughtful. Their sound was softly atmospheric and emotional, laying a beautiful soundtrack to introduce the night.

The stripped-back guitar work and vocals felt almost weightless, causing a calm, attentive hush across the crowd. I was immediately pulled into the deeply personal and honest world they had crafted in their sound. With no need for grand gestures or heavy production, they relied solely on sincerity and subtlety, creating moments that lingered long after their set concluded.

A beautifully mellow act, Fern invoked a nostalgic feeling that has brought me straight back to their material since the weekend. If you like that Elliott Smith-esque, stripped back vibe, then Fern are perfect for your playlist.

Big Moth

Self-proclaimed grungy shoegaze act Big Moth shifted the energy from Fern’s set. Even though this was their live debut, they showed they have plenty of experience on stage. Their sound was textbook shoegaze with distorted guitar, atmospheric layers and a slow-burn emotional core that was all wrapped in a healthy amount of reverb. A wall of sound you couldn't escape, Big Moth shook the room and made a huge first impression.

It’s a straightforward sound with no surprises. If you’re into bands like Superheaven, Glare or Whirr, Big Moth are for you. It seems in the air whether we will see any recorded material any time soon; however this debut leaves me eagerly awaiting their first release.

Gingham

Gingham brought the lively indie rock and catchy hooks we all love. You could hear the clear alternative influence from the 60s and 70s reshaped to fit a more modern shoegaze sound. Their thoughtfully layered tracks filled every nook and cranny in the venue, a truly warm and inviting feeling.

Gingham’s sound shares some similarities with acts such as Alvvays, and the 5-piece did it full justice. Their music will appeal to listeners who enjoy an atmospheric edge to their collection. I had a chance to listen through the two tracks they have released so far, and it’s clear these are exceptional songwriters; they stand out personally as one of the more exciting acts in the local scene.

Genevieve Miles

With a full house, Genevieve Miles had the energy at a high from the start. Celebrating the release of her recent EP ‘then it gets worse’ she played a mix of familiar original and freshly released tracks. The new EP shows her growth as a songwriter, a collection of songs that ranges from tracks that make you want to dance to others that invite quiet reflection and raw emotion.

Backed by an incredibly talented band, these tracks translated beautifully live. Every song felt alive, and Genevieve’s stage presence made each hit even harder. She seems at home on stage, and it brought a very intimate element to the set. With the end of each track, Genevieve spoke about her journey as an artist, playing since the age of 12, as well as her inspirations, such as the track she dedicated to her sister. Not afraid to connect with her fans, even at some points joining them on the floor, her relationship with her audience is personal, and I’m sure it will only add to her success in the future.

A rising star in the scene, Genevieve has put the work in, and the turnout for her celebration only solidifies her rising status. If you’re into your Phoebe Bridgers, Japanese Breakfast, or more recent Wolf Alice, then Genevieve has something for you. With a strong EP behind her and an approachable yet confident live presence, she is easily carving out a space for herself within the indie scene. Be sure to listen to ‘then it gets worse’ below and find any of her upcoming dates.
